The school was founded in 1959 by the Orange County Board of Public Instruction as the first public high school in the area to serve African American students. Originally named Howard Junior/Senior High School after prominent local educator Dr. James R. Howard, it was renamed Boone High School in honor of pioneer settler Daniel Boone shortly after its opening.

The early years of Boone were marked by both progress and struggle for African-Americans living in segregated Central Florida. Despite being understaffed and having limited resources, students at Boone achieved impressive academic success throughout its founding decade, sending multiple students to Ivy League universities and professional colleges across the country. In addition to these educational successes, Boone’s athletic teams made their mark on the state by winning back-to-back football championships in 1967 and 1968.
