History

Howard Middle School in Orlando, FL is a proud part of the Orange County Public Schools System. Established in 1913, it was originally named Pershing Street Community School and served students from kindergarten through high school. It underwent several name changes throughout its history, including Howard High & Grammar School in 1921, Howard Junior High School in 1923, and finally becoming Howard Middle School (HMS) in 1966.

Throughout the years, HMS has provided an exemplary educational experience for its students. In 1998, HMS received recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School due to its excellence in academic achievement and student performance. In 2004 it was re-designated with this recognition which speaks to the commitment of staff and faculty at HMS to provide only the highest quality of educational opportunities.

In addition to academic achievement, HMS has always been committed to creating a safe and secure environment for its students. In 1995 it was the first school in Orange County to install metal detectors at all entrances and exits. In 2010, HMS was also among the first schools in the district to have an active police officer assigned full time as part of the School Resource Officer program.
