Established in 1913, it was originally named Pershing Street Community School and served students from kindergarten through high school. It underwent several name changes throughout its history, including Howard High & Grammar School in 1921, Howard Junior High School in 1923, and finally becoming Howard Middle School (HMS) in 1966.

Throughout the years, HMS has provided an exemplary educational experience for its students. In 1998, HMS received recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School due to its excellence in academic achievement and student performance.
